Social media is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to promote yourself and your music online. Most of us use social media day-to-day in our personal lives but using it as a marketing tool requires a bit more organisation.
How to use Social Media to Promote Your Music
- Go for quality over quantity. Have accounts on all social media relevant to you. That's mainly TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. If you think you will use other services like Snapchat, YouTube and Clubhouse then you should definitely make the most of it. But there's nothing worse than finding an artist's social media account that hasn't been updated for 2 years so think of what you can realistically manage.
- Make sure all your profiles are consistent with your brand, with the same usernames (if you can manage it) and the same imagery or 'look', which will help people find you across all your social channels
- Keep your accounts up to date with current information and images
- Post regularly! You can use a tool like Hootsuite (which is free) to schedule and post updates across all your social media in advance, which helps to be more organised
- Make it personal by posting photos of yourself working on new music or doing things socially from time to time. Fans want to know who you are as well as your music
- Use all the content you have at your fingertips: new music, release artwork, videos, blog posts about your songs, press shots of you, playlists from your Spotify artist page
- Don't forget your artist pages on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer etc. These are just as important as your social pages and will let people discover your music more easily.
How to promote your music on Instagram
Unlike platforms like Facebook and Twitter that seem to have waned in public opinion lately, Instagram is still an artist’s best friend and Instagram music promotion should always be top of your list when it comes to your marketing plan.
There are so many ways you could go promote your music on Instagram, but here are some tips we think would apply to all artists:
- Have a plan! Use a tool like Hootsuite, Later or Planoly to visualise what your feed will look like and plan posts for later.
- Get a ‘Creator’ profile, which you can do in your settings. This will give you access to analytics so you can see what content works best for your audience
- Update your bio. Whether you choose to be mysterious and not add much info, or lay it all out, always make sure you have a link to your Spinnup site or music. Or use a tool like Linktree to add multiple links to your bio.
- Use all the features Instagram has available – mix up your content between in-feed posts, Stories, Reels, InstagramTV and live. Wherever possible make sure you’re using your own music in your Reels & Stories to earn music from it being played!
How to promote your music on Facebook
Setting up a good Facebook profile for your artist page is pretty easy. If you're creating a page for the first time, make sure the type of page is registered as an 'Artist, Brand or Public Figure'.
You can change this in your settings if you already have a page registered in a different category.
Once you have created the page under your artist or band name, we recommend:
- Choose a unique username, click the 'Create Page' button under the profile picture box to choose your @ username. For example, if your artist name is Sam, that will be difficult for people to find your page. Your @ name could be @SamSings or @Sammusicofficial which people can use to search for you more easily. If you already have a Twitter or Instagram, we recommend making your @ usernames the same across all your socials.
- Upload a good quality profile picture and cover picture. Read Facebook's guidelines on the optimal size and resolution
- Complete your 'About' section, including a short bio, website, contact email, links to your other social media, and of course your Spinnup artist profile!
- All that's left is to make sure you post regular, relevant updates to your page with new music, videos, artwork, press shots, playlists - anything you think your fans would find interesting. Just like with Instagram, you can use your own music on Facebook to earn royalties from it being played.
